Observations

On a recent Sunday, I took a drive to clear the cobwebs from my overworked head. While passing through a nearby town, I decided to stop at the library to renew old acquaintances. To my horror it was closed. In fact, it was not open on Sundays at all.

My desire to see the inside of a library was now whetted to a razor's edge. I returned to Beverly and the big, familiar place at 32 Essex Street.

Not only was the library open, but the large parking lot was full of cars. I managed to find a spot and squeezed in.

Once inside, I sat down at the first open computer terminal and played "What do you have that might interest me?" The answers came fast and in copious amounts.

I landed on a respectibly creaky old book written in 1920 about a subject near and dear to my heart. Clipper ships. Two hours later I went home carrying information not found just anywhere. I set to work plugging it into a WWW presentation I am developing. The unpleasant episode of the closed library was gone from my mind.

A Few Library Activities

There are many activities going on at the library. I mention the following in passing.
  • Storyhours for children began January 2nd in the Children's Room.
  • The Daytime Book Discussion Group meets the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 to 2:30 PM.
  • The Evening Book Discussion Group meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 to 9:00.
  • The Friends of the Beverly Public Library 1996 membership drive is on! A few dollars here makes a big difference. Membership forms are available at the circulation desk.
  • Contributions of bestsellers, current hardcover books, paperbacks, books-on-tape, or videos may be donated to the library. Whatever is not added to the library's collection is offered in their Friends book sales, held twice yearly.
