"Glenrock is named for the huge rock which sticks out of the ground in a glen west of the town's center. The fur trappers who first saw the beautiful place were followed by traders on their way to rendezvous, then by a few Mormon settlers, and then as many as 350,000 49ers. Glenrock is also the site of a monument erected to the memory of Dr. FV Hayden, who, along with photographer William H. Jackson, had a hand in convincing Congress to designate the Yellowstone region the country's first National Park. Hayden later founded the US Geological Survey. The monument is the only one composed of granite to be in existence."
