The 1905 annual called him the "Father of Sioux City Basketball."  Started the first team in 1902, won twenty games over a three year span.  Alfred was also the first high school boy to break five minutes in the mile run.  He also ran a very fine 2:05 half mile.

Herbst

Josephine Herbst, 1892-1969  Nationally known author and journalist.  Josephine wrote six novels, many short stories, and hundreds of magazine articles.  She probably is Sioux City's greatest writer.  Some critics called her the "best woman author" of the 1920's and 1930's.

Founder of Mary J. Treglia Center.  City social worker.  Mary was an actress, and a baseball player with the Bloomer Girls, she barnstormed with the "Bloomers."  Probably the best know locally of all Central graduates.

Beat Lincoln, #1 in Nebraska, Beat Sioux Falls Washington #1 in South Dakota, Beat Des Moines East and Clinton #1 & #2 in Iowa.  Also beat Rock Island, Fort Dodge, Omaha South, LeMars, Sheldon.  Only loss was 7-0 to Omaha Central.  9-1-0 Record.

Established a library at the Treglia Community Center.  President of the Youth Symphony.  WWII Chair for the "Grey Ladies of the American Red Cross.  Coordinated "Bundles for Britain."

Won 1st State Championship.  Hass, Williams, More, and Taylor placed 2nd in the State Meet & 1st at the Drake Relays in the 880 relay.  1st in the 440 relay, 1st in the mile relay.  Dahl won the high jump at 5' 7 3/4"   Morgan Taylor placed 1st in the high hurdles, 1st in the 440 yard dash, 1st in the long jump, and anchored the 880 relay.  He was only a Junior.

Sioux City Athlete of the Century.   He not only excelled in track, but he was also All State Football & All State Basketball.  He went on to greatness at Grinnell College.  Beyond college,       1924  Olympics-Paris  Gold Medal in the 400 Meter Hurdles     1928  Olympics-Amsterdam  Silver Medal 400 Meter Hurdles 1932  Olympics-Los Angeles  Bronze Medal 400 Meter Hurdles He was the United States Flag Bearer at Los Angeles. His best time was in the 1932 Olympics running 52.0 for the 400 hurdles.  Without a doubt he was Sioux City's best of the century, arguably the best in Iowa.  Dan Gable is the only Iowan who could rival Morgan's Olympic record.

This class played the first ten game season.  They played #1 Omaha Central to a tie.  Played Cedar Rapids for the Iowa Championship losing 13 to 7.  This game was played before the Iowa State vs. Iowa game.

Nicoles "Nick" Kutch, Dubel, O'Hern, Moore, and Haakinson.  440 in 42.25   The annual said 10.25 per man.  42.25 is really "smokin" for that era.  They also won the Medley Relay at Drake, running 3:42.25  Both are Drake records.

Three time all state football.  Considered the best back in our early years.  Nick later played for Iowa. He ran an 80-yard kick-off return to beat Illinois 10-7.  "Old timers" say he kicked Red Granges' #$% in 1927.

Won the first Athletic Association Championship with a 19 wins 3 loss season.  Opened the season beating LeMars 32-0  They won two games at the Alonzo Stagg Nationals in Chicago losing to the National Champions.
