<< Omaha group offers housing plan for 'Castle'

>Do you think this is a good thing?

July 27th, 2000

Hmmmmmm,

Well,,,
I would have preferred to see the Sioux City Museum go in as a key tenant,
some private funding and matching grants, and some outright grant money come
in to refurbish and vitalize the building to the point that it became an
attractive alternative for more general public and historical use. And, we
had hoped to stir up some interest through CastleWeb, after we increased the
alumni registrations to some critical mass, and attract some qualified and
experienced alumni to pursue fundraising primarily through writing some
quality grant proposals.

The twenty percent of alumni that remained in Sioux City received too little
support from the eighty percent of us that had moved away. The challenge
was too much to have expected them to shoulder that burden without our
active support.

That said, the twenty-five years of abject neglect, leaking roof, broken
windows, flocks of pigeons, and the general ravages of time and weather had
deteriorated the structure to the point that the resources required to bring
the Castle back to some reasonable state of repair seemed beyond energy
available to confront the situation with private funding.

So that said,
Yes, I think it's a good thing, and I sincerely hope that the Castle is in
the hands of someone who takes care of it like we should have.
