Siouxland "Y" Promoting Roller Blade Hockey
in COHA's Old Gymnasium

Third Graders through Eight Graders

Castle on the Hill's gymnasium is the site for the youth roller blade hockey tournament sponsored by the Siouxland "Y" of Sioux City. The Castle's gym is the only indoor gym in the city to have a cement floor for roller blade hockey. Tile and wood floors do not hold up to the roller blades. Consequently, the Castle was in a position to furnish the site for this particular activity.

Chris Fisher, of the Siouxland "Y", contacted board member George Zeitner about renting the gym for roller blade hockey. Initially, he needed one night each week for practice and Saturdays for tournaments. However after registrations were in, he required two more nights for practice and 12 hours on Saturday. Twenty-four teams were entered in the competition with seven members on each team. Three divisions comprised the tournament third/fourth graders, fifth/sixth graders, and seventh/eighth graders. Some teams included both boys and girls.

During practice sessions and tournament play on Saturdays, the Castle has seen a definite increase in visitors not only the players, but parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends. Chris estimated that on Saturdays there would be 300 to 400 people attending the hockey league tournaments. During the week, some parents would also attend the practice sessions along with coaches for each team.

The Castle was encouraged to set up a concession stand, which featured pop, candy Skiddles, coffee, and Kandiyohi premium drinking water. Josh Olsen and Tim Hale, gift shop personnel, operated the stand.

The "Y" started using the gym on October 12th and will complete the tournaments about the first week in December.

Josh Olsen Assumes New Duties at COHA

Josh Olsen, gift shop manager, has assumed a part-time position of Public Relations Consultant for the Castle. COHA board members authorized this change at their monthly meeting last October. He will continue as Gift Shop manager.

In his new position, Josh will be responsible for all rentals for the gym and auditorium along with scheduling all the events and activities at the Castle. He has two wedding dates in the newly furbished auditorium set for July of 2000. In the summer and fall, he will be in charge of reunions and tours for the Castle.

Josh's future plans include making contact with television and radio stations and print advertising concerning the activities of the Castle. He would like to promote and recruit new volunteer programs. He is interested in making contacts with the business world for donations and rental space. Fundraisers and contacts with local schools for auditorium use are also in his plans.

During the months of November and ending in February, the Castle Gift Shop will be closed during the weekdays. Appointments can be made by calling the gift shop at 255-3515 or the Castle office 258-0626. Saturday and Sundays the shop will be open from 1 to 5 p.m.

Two Sioux City business donated labor and materials to refurnish the gift shop. Fluorescent lights and a drop ceiling were installed.

Jaycees Haunted Castle Has People Standing in Line

Sioux City Jaycees and Z-98, a local radio station, held their annual haunted castle this past October. Each year for the past five years, the Jaycees hold their haunted house on the first floor of the Castle.

Work for the haunted castle begins in early August and continues until just before the opening date in October. This year the first nighter was on October 15th and continued for eight more evenings. This year's theme was "Welcome To Your Nightmare."

Local businesses and volunteers contributed to the success of their haunted castle. Sioux City Jaycees promote this project to raise finances for their organization.

Future Plans for Castle Formulated by Architect

Cornerstone Faith Center and Castle on the Hill Association have entered into an agreement to remodel the heating and cooling system in the auditorium. Castle board members met with Layne Johnson, youth pastor at Cornerstone Faith Center, last August and discussed how his church would use the auditorium for youth meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Layne was very excited when he was given a tour of the building in September. He could see the possibilities that the auditorium provided for his group. After visiting with different board members, Layne was convinced that this was the place for his group. Layne was invited to attend a Castle board meeting in September where he presented his ideas about using the auditorium.

Both parties agreed to continue with Layne's proposal concerning how to make the auditorium ready. A heating and cooling contractor reviewed the area and explained how and where the units would be placed along with a "ball park" estimate on the cost.

Before any further study was done by both parties concerning the auditorium, COHA was notified by the city building inspector that an architect should be contacted for the purpose of preparing plans for the entire building. Bob Lee of RML Architects was contacted and he agreed to assist in this project. Mr. Lee and two of his mechanical people along with board members Owen Peters, Frank Conkey, and Don Jensen, toured the building.

Mr. Lee will make a report with preliminary drawings illustrating proposed rehabilitation for the auditorium. Other changes that will be necessary to bring the auditorium up to city building codes include toilets, corridors, stairs, exits, and elevator. The elevator will make the auditorium and the rest of the building handicap accessible.

The report will provide for a phased restoration of the building and recommendations for development of mechanical and electrical systems.

COHA Congratulates Honor Roll Members

Castle on the Hill Association appreciates those who have contributed their finances to the Ladies and Knights of the Castle Honor Roll.

As you recall, last March COHA started a program entitled "Ladies and Knights of the Castle Honor Roll." Members would assist the association by agreeing to send in $10.00 per month to help defray incidental expenses. Honor Roll people have been a tremendous help with this program.

We have had a few discontinue their monthly giving, but others have joined in taking up some of the slack.

During our class reunions last summer and this fall we were able to meet some of our Honor Roll members. It was really interesting to put a face with a name on the roll.

With membership dues coming in at different times during the year, it is difficult to project a budget let alone keep up the monthly bills that arrive.

COHA would like to extend a big hearty "thank you" to those who have become members of the Honor Roll.

Roof Repairs Completed by Castle Board Member

Gary Olsen, newly elected COHA board member, undertook the huge ]responsibility of repairing the roof on the Jackson street turret and also the roof over the boiler room.

Each project has been causing damage to the interior of the building, Before the roof repair could begin, Paul Reinert Castle security and maintenance person, spent a Saturday cleaning pigeon "dodo" off the wooden ladder that extended to the top of the turret. Since this operation was a health risk, Paul was required to wear a dust respirator mask.

After climbing inside the turret [or tower] on two extension ladders and reaching the top, Gary found not only gaping holes on the roof but four of the air intake slots had rotted out over the years allowing pigeons to gain entrance into the building.

With the help of two assistants, Gary was able to plug up the holes and patch the roof leaks.

Next project to be undertaken was the boiler room roof. This required a "clean sweep" of the roof. After cleaning the roof, the workers laid a three-quarter inch of special fibered tar roofing material over the entire surface.

The Castle is now almost 'pigeon free." until a window is broken and then it will be boarded up as soon as possible. No more water leaks on the turret or over the boiler room area.

Three Decide to Contribute Skills

Castle on the Hill Association individuals Bev Kolbe, Paul Reinert, and Don Jensen decided it was time to do some repair work on the south side of the Castle.

These three took it upon themselves to do the necessary repair work which included filling in two large gaping holes along the base of the foundation. Using a concrete sand mix and small fire bricks, Don was able to brick up the space and then put a thin coat of back plaster over the entire surface. Meanwhile Bev was doing some necessary tuck pointing along the base of the foundation.

Paul was busy carrying buckets of dirt to fill in where the rains had washed away the dirt around the base of the foundation.

COHA's Web Page Reaches Graduates

Castle's Web Page has been in operation for a little over two months reaching to all alumni who are connected to the Internet.

John Haviland, alumni 1957 along with two other buddies, have been actively working on this project since last June. The Web Page features 20 pages highlighting both Castle on the Hill Association news and information about Central.

Some of the titles include Alumni Survey, Castle/COHA History, Faculty Lounge, Class Year Pages, Gift Shop, Class Reunions, Castle Web Funding, Castle Report, Castle Web News, and Alumni Directory. These are a few of the pages. Others are being developed and will appear later.

Alumni survey responses to the Web Page have been very encouraging. During the first month, 210 alumni completed the survey and registered for the alumni directory. Almost 40% said they would use the site sometimes and 32% said very frequently.

Alumni from 35 states have registered and 75% have made all their personal information available for the directory.

Iowa is the state where most alumni are living with California coming in second.

Thirty-eight class years are represented with the classes of 1959 and 1960 tied at 25%.

A new item is the "Mystery Picture." CastleWeb has selected a picture and would like responses as to who, when, and where you think the picture is about. Go to the Web Site and select "Picture Page" to find the Mystery Picture."

You can log on to the Castle Web Page at: www.globalindex.com/CastleWeb/
Do not use any spaces in the address. We would appreciate everyone associated with the Castle to get the word out about the Web Site. So ask all your friends and relatives who are alumni to register.

Castle News ....

COHA received the first membership from its WebPages in November. Our WebPage has the ability to sign up for membership by copying the form and mailing it to the Castle office.

Linda Olsen received information from the Powell grant people that our grant of $73,000 was not approved. This would have provided a multipurpose room for rental. She also was notified from the State Historical Society that her grant of $100,000 was denied. This grant would have provided a handicap elevator for the Castle.

Castle Gift Shop is being reorganized to allow for organizations to rent this space. Genealogical Society is considering renting the former Castle office to store their archives and possibly using the gift shop for their monthly meetings.
