Castle's Recent Renovation Projects Viewed by Visitors Visitors to the Castle on the Hill Association's Open House held on May 7, were surprised to see the 'new look' as they walked through the halls. Castle board members Gary and Linda Olsen, Frank Conkey, Bev Kolble, Owen and Joy Peters, Don Jensen, and volunteers, Connie Hoklin and Millie Jensen, began working to redo the second floor hallway by the murals. Approximately five weeks before the open house, Deputy Sheriff Ingram brought in community service people on a Sunday morning to begin scraping the paint. A few days later, eight women masked out all necessary areas. Gary and Frank used a paint sprayer, donated by Meier Painting Company, and sprayed a chemical on the ceiling that would cover stains and help the new paint hold longer. Next a compressor was used to apply a texture to the ceiling. Linda worked on a scaffold and painted the upper half walls with a cream colored paint. Millie helped by using a painting roller. Bev and Frank painted the lower walls with a green paint. Now the second floor hallway from the auditorium door on the east side to the door on the west side has been completely repainted and all light bulbs have been replaced along with globe fixtures. Owen and Joy Peters, along with Don were kept busy doing "a little of this and a little of that." Sheriff Ingram again brought in a group of men and the third, second, and first floor hallways were swept and scrubbed. Two men, Craig Lanegan and Don Hilden used a scrubbing machine and cleaned the 2nd floor hallways by the auditorium. Next evening Don came back and put a coat of wax on the floor. Connie, Millie and Bev worked in restoring the faculty ladies lounge area and renamed it Foxie Ladies Room. You just have to see the final renovation when you visit the Castle.
Project Hope COHA's Project Hope which calls for a handicapped elevator to be installed on the north side of the building, is getting a good response from alumni and friends. As of June 1, $24,230 has been collected. Linda Olsen sent letters to 36 class captains in January of this year. Of the 36 only 11 classes have sent in their roster & 1943 is the earliest class list and 1967 is the latest. Linda and Don Jensen retyped each list into a computer database. This database has 3,400 names with addresses, city and state, along with the zip code. On February 1st, the first mailing went out which included four class lists. The others were mailed at different intervals with the class of 1944 being the last mailing on May 8th. Contributions have come in from 34 states. The class of 1935 is the earliest one and 1967 is the latest. $5.00 is the smallest while $1,000 is the largest. The class of 1943 has contributed the largest amount with $1,190. Some donations have been given for all three stops at $172 each. Bids for the project are in the process of being completed by two elevator companies and two construction firms.
Open House Hosted by Castle on the Hill by Linda Olsen On May 7, the Castle was host to more than 300 people reminising and touring our historical displays and recent renovations as part of the National Historical Preservation week. Open House attractions included our 1,700 seat auditorium with near perfect acoustics; Hall of Fame displaying class pictures and photographs of outstanding alumni including MacDonald Carey - TV soap opera star. Twin sisters Esther Pauline and Pauline Esther Friedman of Ann Landers and Dear Abby fame. Jim Hindman founder of Jiffy Lube, and Jay 'Ding" Darling, winner of Pulitzer Prizes for editorial cartoons. Memorabilia Room had trophies, band and track uniforms, old desks, and football programs from years gone by, tennis and track records in bronze lettering. Also included in the displays were a print shop museum, gift shop, and a video on the history of the Castle. Also in the "old office' area were school annuals, The Record (school newspaper) and pictures depicting early Sioux City history. Visitors also viewed the Lincoln statue for the first time since his return to the Castle also the murals that were painted in 1934. The open house concluded with a program honoring former facufty for their commitment and dedication to education in Sioux City particularly at Central High. Tony Drake, city councilman, presented certificates to 15 faculty who were in attendance. It was a great time to reminisce with fomer faculty and classmates as well as imagine the possibilities for the future of the Castle. Connie Holdin sewed maroon and white flags for the ocassion. They were eighteen inches wide and four feet long. Eight were mounted on PCV pipe and formed a line along the second wall on Jackson street. Very impressive when people drove by and they can also be used for reunions this summer.

WebPage Promotes Activities at CastleJohn Haviland and his group, known as The II-VII Corner, have done an outstanding job of getting the website up and running. John updates the site with newsletters, Project Hope progress, e-mail addresses, pictures depicting renovation progress at the Castle and many other worthwhile activities. John says that the volume at the site has been steadily increasing. In February there were 2,800 visits, March 4,700 and in April 7,200. Alumni registrations increased to over 500.
